No matter what they did in the past, no matter what their mother, brother, or ex-insignificant other ever said, and no matter how many failed diets and exercise regimens haunt their past, your participants are not doomed to a lifetime of poor habits of health.
But if they keep doing what they’ve already done in the past, they’ll keep getting the same results they’ve been getting in the past. If that doesn’t sound so appealing, then you’ll need to guide them towards a different strategy. So let’s talk about how to make lifestyle change more effective and user-friendly.
Our health promotion model
How about we leverage the body’s biochemical activity and build on strengths, rather than fuss over weaknesses? For example, if a participant has a hard time managing her food intake, then food is her problem, not her solution! Guide her towards improving other health behaviors, ones she’s interested in, something that will feel easier to her. Doing so will produce changes in her biochemical activity (like increase her serotonin, reduce her cortisol, etc), which will then make her food habits easier to tackle. You’ll be able to build on initial victories, help her feel empowered, and really change how she perceives her capacity for change. She’ll talk about you as the super star who made it all possible, as a bonus!
